DTS Headphone Surround HowTo

I recently bought a Asus P8Z68-V PRO motherboard which features DTS Surround Sensation UltraPC with support for speakers and headphones profiles.

In my case that virtual surround feature is interesting because I have a 2+1 stereo speaker setup.

First I had to figure out how to switch profiles from DTS Surround Sensation Speakers to Headphones and back.

The trick to switch profiles is to switch between AC97 Front Panel and HD Audio Front Panel. That can be done clicking on the yellow folder icon above the back panel matrix shown in the Speakers tab in the Realtek HD Audio Manager window, accesible by clicking on the orange speaker icon in the Windows tray.

Selecting AC97 option enables DTS Surround Sensation Headphones profile and selecting HD audio Front Panel enables the Speakers profile automatically.

Now, don't try to listen to this virtual surround using Windows Media Player. It sounds horrible. May be because it does not have an option to set the player output to 5.1 channels, as suggested in the DTS options panel.

So far, I've found only SMPlayer allows me to set the audio output channels to 5.1 without disabling the DTS function in the Realtek Audio Manager. Go to Options / Preferences / General / Audio / Default channels. And it sounds clean and really better than with DTS off!
