How To Set GDM To Use The Current Gnome Wallpaper Automatically

There is a program called Xplash Background Settings that runs a daemon that changes GDM background setting whenever Gnome background is changed. It also has an option that makes it easy to change GDM background independently from Gnome background.

Prerequisites

sudo apt-get install xsplash imagemagick python-gconf python-gtk2 python-gksu2 python-gobject

Download

Download Xplash Background Settings deb package from here.

Post-install setup

sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 -t string -s /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename /usr/share/images/xsplash/bg_2560x1600.jpg
sudo chmod -R a+rw /usr/share/images/xsplash

Configuration

  • First reboot once
  • Then open Mint menu and go to Preferences/ Xplash background settings
  • Set the option to Use desktop background
  • Change Gnome background a couple times for the daemon to notice
Voila!
